Three misconceptions addressed to me by amateur theorists claim that tornadoes are downdrafts, magnetic and create an internal implosion while approaching a structure. These are outlandish speculations. Here are the facts, the research, and the truth brought to you by Mr. Tornado: Frequently Asked Questions 7.13 Tornadoes have been observed to descend from clouds. Is there a danger that the vortex will descend outside the vortex producing station? I have read that the energy produced in the clouds is concentrated and transmitted to the ground. Tornadoes do not come down from above. The energy of tornadoes is the result of the buoyancy of air that originates at the bottom of the atmosphere. The descending funnel is the result of the condensation level coming down as the pressure within the vortex decreases. The flow in the cylindrical wall of a tornado is upward. There may be a minor downward flow on the axis, but this downward flow is small compared to the upward flow. It is the upward flow that produces the energy. Tornadoes do not descend; there is no danger of a tornado coming down from above. Tornadoes are caused by the rising of buoyant surface air. The pressure reduction in a tornado results from the buoyancy of the air that has risen previously in the tornado. Tornadoes do not concentrate the turbulent energy of turbulent clouds and channel it down. It is true that the mechanical energy is produced aloft, but only as a result of the buoyancy of the immediately preceding air which has originated near the surface. - MYTH #3: OPENING WINDOWS TO EQUALIZE AIR PRESSURE WILL SAVE A ROOF, OR EVEN A HOME, FROM DESTRUCTION BY A TORNADO To get to the very center of a mature tornado, where the pressure may be low enough to cause some explosive effects, the windows would have to endure 100- to 200-mph winds in the outer walls of the vortex. Those winds would be laden with boards, stones, cars, trees, telephone poles, and the neighbor's roof shingles as well as wind pressure of more than 100 pounds per square foot. This barrage would blow more than enough ventilation holes in the building to allow any pressure difference to be equalized. Even with the windows closed, most houses and commercial buildings have enough openings to vent the pressure difference in the time that it takes for a tornado to pass. Engineers at Texas Tech point out that the pressure drop inside a tornado with 260-mph winds is only about 10 percent, or 1.4 pounds per square inch (Minor, McDonald, and Mehta 1977). A violent tornado would blow apart a house before this 10 percent pressure drop ever arrived. Venting of air to relieve air pressure would not be an issue, although most buildings can vent this difference through its normal openings in about three seconds. MYTH #5: MOBILE HOMES ATTRACT TORNADOES Several times a year meteorologists at government laboratories are approached by people who believe that they have discovered the answer to the question of why mobile homes attract tornadoes. Often the idea is that, in rotating, the tornado turned itself into a generator of electricity and therefore into a powerful electromagnet, despite the lack of any copper wire. Thus the tornado becomes attracted to the metal in mobile homes. These amateur theorists ignore the fact that magnetic anomalies have never been recorded near a passing tornado. They ignore case after case in which tornadoes have bypassed trailer parks, railroad yards, and truck terminals, and continued their nearly straight-line path uninterrupted.
